The Island in the Mist of the Gods

Crete, Greece 1992: It should actually be a normal fishing trip, as Alex, Aris and Thais went out to sea on that summer day. But suddenly they are surprised by a violent storm that drives them far out to sea, where they eventually landed on an uninhabited island that is not on any map. They however soon realize they are not alone there.

When we woke up the next morning, the sun was shining through the porthole into the cabin.

The sea was calm again and the boat seemed to have remained intact after the storm.

We went on deck and hoisted the sails, which also remained intact.

Aris looked at the compass and spread out a map on the roof of the cabin, on which the whole of the eastern Aegean was seen.

“According to my calculations, we are 40 to 60 sea miles east or south-east of Crete.”

As the two of us looked at the map, my cousin called out with joy:

“Land in sight! I can see an island on the horizon.”

Aris took the binoculars and looked in the direction where his sister had just sighted land.

He looked at the map, then at the compass and said: "That cannot be. According to my calculations, there is no island in this area. At the very least this island is not marked on the map."
